Since submitting his first article to the Climber & Rambler magazine in 1978, Stephen has published hundreds of articles and photographs in specialist journals around the world. He has also written for the Daily Telegrah, Sunday Telegraph, Times, Sunday Times, Observer, Guardian, Independent, Financial Times and Mail on Sunday.

He is asked frequently to comment on mountaineering matters in both print and broadcast media, but he likes best to write more general travel pieces which are not confined to climbing.
