Another trip down Memory Lane, in the Lanberis Pass,
climbing Kaisergebirge Wall for the first time since
1974. Good to see that Peter Harding’s rusty bicycle crank shaft
from the first ascent is still there in the crux crack.

Down to Zermatt, completing five magnificent days on the
Haute Route with Edmond. The last time I did it was with
my parents 29 years ago. As I have to be back in
Shrewsbury for a lecture on Thursday, we had to hurry,
doing a double stage from Verbier to the Dix Hut. Then,

Edmond and I are met at San Francisco airport by Paul Teare –
the first time I’ve seen him since our Everest reunion in New

after nightfall in Yosemite valley, where his friends Gil and
Tres have dinner waiting. More.... |

ARAPILES
Fantastic weekend at Australia’s most famous crag, Mount
Arapiles. Drought-ravaged Victoria has just enjoyed a

sandstone outside The Cape.

| 09.09.09 - NEW ZEALAND - SPRING SKIING AROUND WANAKA
Last week was busy, with lectures in Auckland, Wellington,

and a visit to the place I have wanted to see for thirty years –
the Darran Mountains in Fjordland.

PICOS AND PONGAS Just back from a fantastic trip to northern Spain,
courtesy of Inntravel and The Observer. The commission
was for a piece on the Ponga Mountains. More about that
in the moment, but first the Picos de Europa, where I
managed to tag on four extra days. Half-made plans to
meet the Basque film maker José-Carlos Tamayo didn’t
work out. Never mind. After an excellent night’s sleep
under the stars, I arrived for breakfast, unannounced,
at the wonderful Casa Gustavo near Potes, on the sunny
south side of the Picos. more... |

SKIING AROUND CHAMONIX Just back from six days
magnificent skiing around Chamonix. Apart from the usual bashing up and down the
Grands Montets, Edmond and I did a few ski tours, in the
company of the Alpine Club’s Honorary Secretary,
Françoise Call, Alan Scowcroft and others.
