On 9th June Stephen will be the main speaker at the annual Himalayan Trust fundraiser at the Royal Geographical Society. The other speaker is Mike Gill, who took part in the famous Silver Hut Expedition and made the first ascent of Ama Dablam (below) in 1961.  More >>

Another trip down Memory Lane, in the Lanberis Pass, climbing Kaisergebirge Wall for the first time since 1974. Good to see that Peter Harding’s rusty bicycle crank shaft from the first ascent is still there in the crux crack.  More.....

Down to Zermatt, completing five magnificent days on the Haute Route with Edmond. The last time I did it was with my parents 29 years ago. As I have to be back in Shrewsbury for a lecture on Thursday, we had to hurry, doing a double stage from Verbier to the Dix Hut. Then, yesterday, More....

October 22 - Edmond and I are met at San Francisco airport by Paul Teare – the first time I’ve seen him since our Everest reunion in New York, twenty years ago. We head east in his van and arrive soon after nightfall in Yosemite valley, where his friends Gil and Tres have dinner waiting. More....

Fantastic weekend at Australia’s most famous crag, Mount Arapiles. Drought-ravaged Victoria has just enjoyed a brief spell of spring rain, so everything was green and flowery. The peregrines keened, the kookaburras made their crazy monkey noises and the kangaroos grazed contentedly, while we enjoyed the finest metamorphosed sandstone outside The Cape.

Just back from a fantastic trip to northern Spain, courtesy of Inntravel and The Observer. The commission was for a piece on the Ponga Mountains. More about that in the moment, but first the Picos de Europa, where I managed to tag on four extra days. Half-made plans to meet the Basque film maker José-Carlos Tamayo didn’t work out. Never mind. After an excellent night’s sleep under the stars, I arrived for breakfast, unannounced, at the wonderful Casa Gustavo near Potes, on the sunny south side of the Picos. more...

16.10.08 - SOUTH GEORGIA

Stephen sets off today for South Georgia – his third visit to the sub-antarctic island – to join international yachtsman Skip Novak leading a group on the Shackleton Traverse.
